we have a 2000 seadoo bombadier GTI.
It blew an engine so we bought a used one online, bolted it to the front case with the electrical components and installed it. When we hit the start button it engages but doesn't turn. Is there a timing mark somewhere we missed?
It acts like it is out of time but the engine came assembled and turn over fine by hand? Any help on where to start would be appreciated...thanks.

It turned over by hand easily with no plugs in it but once we attached evrything it won't turn over.
It acts like something is locking up on the intial crank. I don't have much experience with small engines like this just larger gas and diesel engines.
The only two exterior pieces iI bolted on were the fron case with the electrical components and the side piece with the oil injector (it had a funny looking plate that spins around an open hole.

Can you still turn it over by hand? You need to remove the plugs and try and hand turn the pto (flywheel where the drive shaft connects)

When you installed the engine did you remove the jet pump and use a seadoo engine alignment tool to align the engine and jet pump?
If not that could be binding it up, as by hand you are nothing near the torque of that starter and if the alignment was off enough it could bind up.
If you pull the spark plugs and ground the wires and try to start it will it turn over then with the start button?
If not, then I have a feeling still that it is binding up, I bet if you pull the jet pump off and remove the driveshaft that thing will crank right over..
Also check the main engine ground connection and make sure it is tight.

No we didn't use the alignement tool.
We did disconnect the impeller and tried to start it but it was still bound. Are you saying the shaft itself inside the engine could be bound?

Yes,
The torque from the starter if the engine and pump are not aligned can blind up the shaft at the motor splines.
Before any damage is done you need to know that you will have to remove the entire pump assembly and the driveshaft and also inspect the splines to make sure they did not get damaged.
You will need a seadoo engine alignment tool to align the motor and jetpump, did you also remove the motor mounts? If so did you put the shims back exactly where they where removed from?
If you need step by step instructions to remove the pump and driveshaft let me know, the driveshaft where it enters the hull has a rubber boot on the inside of the hull right infront of the boot that is on the shaft there is a silver collar, remove both clamps from the boot and push the metal collar towards the rear of the ski, you may have to tap it for it to move, and under it will be a lock ring, remove it and do not loose it, then remove the 4 bolts from the nossel and the steering, reverse, and trim cables off of it and remove the nossel, then remove the 4 nuts holding the pump on and remove the pump and driveshaft as one unit. Then try to turn it over.
It should now turn over fine, you need to obtain a seadoo engine alignment tool at this time or rent one and align your engine properly. No matter what you need to align the engine and pump with that tool, so the pump and shaft have to be removed anyways.

You are the man..thanks. I will try it in the morning and try it with my son and get back with you.
thanks.

Well I spent all day yesterday pulling the shaft and it wasn't bound, so I pulled the engine and found out the oil injection pump some how bound up with that spinning plate. I took that apart and put it back together and it all worked fine.
Now it all functionally works great but it won't fire. I have spark and what I belive to be good fuel but maybe it has to be pressurized to atomize.
That is where I am at now, so thank you for your help, it sent me down the path to find the cause. If you have any ideas on the last part of my puzzle, please let me know..thanks again for the great help..Rob.

Make sure to use the seadoo alignment tool this time, or it could bind up again in the actual pump, and I know you dont want to cause damage.
Ok, as far as a fuel problem, did you rebuild the carb before you put it back on?
Are the fuel lines that are on it grey?
If you pull a spark plug is it soaked with gas or dry after you try to start it?

The fuel lines are grey..
I did not rebuild the carb..it ran perfect before the last engine blew from lack of water to cool it down in the pipe and the plugs were damp but not soaked..thanks.

ok, remove a spark plug put the plug wire on it and crank over the engine you should have blue spark at each plug?
Next try a small spray (1 time only) starting fluid into the carb and see if she starts and dies or at least trys to start better then before?

Already did that..it puttered but never actually fired.
I know it gets spark because I checked that already with fire ignition tester and the old school way by leaving a plug attached and turning it over.
Almost acts like a bigger engine when the valves are out of adjustment and the compression is bleeding out an open valve..
